She grinned even more.
"They stopped having to wear them," she said. "Do all Hufflepuff boys take such an interest in the underwear of girls from history?"

"You like letting me dig holes for myself, don't you?"

"Don't tease so much Tanith," said Mary quietly, "Walter's alright. He's not like the Slytherin boys. He's nice."
That slipped out as an easy comment - the Slytherins always baited and teased each other- a constant dance of social order. But she heard the words she spoke and flinched suddenly as though she'd suddenly bitten into something foul.

Walte rhad known her too long to miss it. "Thanks, Mary." He patted her on the back, and glanced at Tanith to see if she'd noticed.

"Are you okay, Ant?" asked Tanith, her head on one side.

"I'm fine," Mary said and wriggled away from Walter's hand, "I'm fine."

He had never been one to push. She'd talk when she was ready. Or when he had the chance to get her alone later. If someone, and he had an idea who, had hurt her, well...he felt his jaw tighten and forced himself to relax.
"Okay. Sorry."

"Sorry," said Mary, and touched his arm. "You made me jump that's all. Hey shall we walk down to the lake?"

"Why not? The sun is out, we can sit and watch for the squid."

"And Hogwarts is famous for its enormous tentacles," said Tanith automatically but her heart wasn't in it. Something was wrong with Ant. "Let's go cephalapod watching then."

Back in the Great Hall, Desmond Warren sat watching the action on the orbs. Different teams of mixed houses. That didn't bother him as much as it once would have done. He recognised many of the participants and saw them exploring and running and talking. It would have been good to have been back in time to be included, to show that he was changed, safe to be around. He had once had such a temper, such a dangerous unpredictable temper. Anger is not a bad thing, he had been told, it is a useful engine for powering change. But one had to be the master of the engine, not its servant. One had to notice the anger and not let it dominate. Use it safely to encourage positive change of that which was wrong. It does not have to break the glass. Broken glass has no purpose except to cut deeply and spill bloodHe had changed. Desmond Warren was in control now. He smiled faintly and breathed deeply and imagined nothing at all

By the Lake
Tanith was sitting on Rookwood's Rock down by the lake looking down at the wind-waves on the water far beneath, drumming her fingers abstractedly against the thick vein of deep red quartz that ran down one side of the granite boulder. She had her wand in her other hand.
"So come on then," she challenged, "anybody got a charm they need to learn or a magical effect they want to achieve. Aunty Tanith will know it or your money back."
She flashed a light from her wand that became an explosion of short lived butterflies to prove her point. Flashy but fun.

Walter leaned back against the stone. "I'm kinda good for now. Swamped enough with the professors already reminding us that next year is OWL year." He sighed. He knew potions was a lock, but pretty much everything else was going to need a lot of work next fall and spring.
"Unless you've got something for hiding cauldrons and supplies in plain sight. Mine keep getting confiscated."

"If anyone knows a charm like that it's Tanith," said Mary with a bright smile, "She's taught me loads."
The "Hands to Yourself" charm for instance, she thought. That had worked perfectly. But what happened after...
"She.. I.. Tanith you should teach him something. What was that Misty one you showed me?"

"Mist Whispers," said Tanith smugly. She raised her wand to her lips and seemed to blow a kiss across the tip. A tiny whisp of mist like breath on a cold day drifted lazily away from it. It curled and coiled, almost invisible in the air and drifted a little toward Walter. As it drew close to his ear it dissipated and he clearly heard Tanith's soft voice right in his ear.
"Like it?"
