(this is for playing the characters that aren't participating, or lose their place in the game. during the breaks in duelsports, the story will continue in the main thread, but this will keep it looking a little cleaner XD - hayley)
Walter looked around the Great Hall, taking in the new arrangements.
The house tables had been taken away and replaced with many small round tables, each seating about 6-8 people. There were spaced comfortably around the hall, leaving the center free. Food and drink, rather than appearing as it normally did on the house tables, was set up on a single long table in the style of a buffet. This was situated in front of the staff table, which had remained in place.
In the center of the hall, a stone dais had been raised. On this dais stood six pedestles, eached marked with the gemstone that represented one of the teams in the Arena. The names of the students participating were neatly carved into the stone of the pedestles, along with the symbol of their house.
Hovering just above each pedestle was an orb. Until that morning, the orbs had been blank, but now each showed shifting images of the teams they were following.
It took him very little time to locate his friends and aquaintences, some of whom (like Serenity with her bright blue hair, and Scarlet's own silvery blonde) where easily recognizable. He had slightly more time recognzing the others in the shifting images.

Mary came over toward Walter carrying a couple of drinks. She handed him a pumpkin juice.
"It's looking good isn't it?" she said, "The new hall I mean. I think it will help people get into the duelsports so much better. Good views and... well... getting rid of the House tables mirrors the way the teams are split up."

"Thanks." Walter said, taking the pumpkin juice. "And I agree. I mean, half the eagles have been ignoring the house tables anyway for the past few months, so it wasn't as devisive as it used to be, but still. We're rooting for our friends, not for a house."

Mary smiled at his words.
"That's how it should be," she said, "I've always thought that."
She took a seat and looked over the orbs.
"Very exciting," she said. Her eyes flicked from one to the other rapidly and she rubbed her wrist absent mindedly. "I believe a couple of the younger Gryffindors are running a secret sweepstake on what will happen."

"I'd put my money on..." he looked over what team names he could see. "Ruby or Diamond, probably. If I were a betting man. You?"

"Oh I don't know," said Mary, shrugging, "I just hope they all enjoy it. It will be a great show I think, and very exciting. That's what counts."

"Shame about team Jade there though." He caught a glimpse of Julius and Caleb making their way down the side of a steep hill behind Scarlet and Hugo. "With the exception of getting to work with her boyfriend, I wouldn't want to be Scarlet right now."

Mary drank half the remaining pumpkin juice and nodded, watching the Ruby team intently.
"I wouldn't know what to do in that sort of competition," she admitted, "it all seems a bit intense."

"Well, as far as I know, the group of eagles I'm friends with isn't afraid of a good fight." A shadow crossed his fate. "Most of them have been in...intense...situations in the past, of course. I imagine this is much more comfortable for them."

"I've only heard bits of it," admitted Mary, "but they do seem to have been... well... involved in things."
She reached out to touch Walter's arm, but drew her hand back self consciously. "And you're friends with them. That's great."

"Yeah, no idea how I managed that feat." He rubbed the back of his neck self-consiously. "They're so much cooler than me." He gave her a rueful smile.

"You're pretty cool Walter," Mary said with a reassuring smile, "really cool in fact."

He grinned bashfully. "I'll take your word for it. Oh hey, look what Annie's doing." He watched as Sophie seemed to melt into near invisibility.

"Oh brilliant," said Mary, "How clever. I'd never think of anything like that."
She hated the thought of anyone getting hurt though, which is one reason she'd never contemplated entering. If there were any cuts and bruises (or heaven forbid, worse) she'd be the first in line to help though. Whoever it was. She rubbed at her wrist again and frowned at the Orb.

Tanith Ravenscall sauntered into the Hall and gave a half-grin at the rearrangement of the place. Habit took her a few paces toward where the Slytherin table used to be, and she corrected herself smoothly, looking around the place at the new set up. Today she'd accessorised her look with a stylised silver spider brooch, and a small and elegant spiderweb design in fine black tracery around her right eye. After six years of Tanith the teachers had largely let this sort of thing slide.
Seeing Mary she wandered over and perched on a table near her, swinging her legs.
"Hey Ant," she said, "how are you doing?"
