The Bethel Institute"And behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it"The Bethel Institute was established in the seventeenth century as a hospital and refuge for "those unfortunates of our magickal community who for divers reasons have become disordered in the wyts and whose reason be distempered, and for whose safety and that of the publicke at large must be sequestered from the rigours and temptations of society." Its reputation in those early days was as dark and forbidding as most lunatic asylums could boast, and the fact that it was established and run by and for the wizarding community only improved things to the extent that magic was used for both confining and treating the inmates rather than some of the more common methods of the day.
Since 1980 though the renamed Bethel Institute (formerly the St Mary of Bethany Asylum for the Insane) has been run on more enlightened principles originally under the auspices of Senior Healer Cain Quinn and since 1999 by Quinn's protege Grace Cantor. Under Healer Cantor's guidance the Institute has developed a reputation for effective care, treatment and rehabilitation of its patients.
Located just outside Oxford the Bethel Institute is privately funded and overseen by charitable bodies for the benefit of the magical community of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
