"They aren't real. They shouldn't want anything at all."

"Tabitha if they aren't real why do you care about them?"
Grace moved closer to the girl and looked into her eyes, trying to focus the girl on her, and not on any unseen other participants.
"Why do you care?" She did not add 'about anyone' but she was tempted.

"They're everywhere." She leaned back, away from her. "And I have to know who is and who isn't because...because."

"Where do they come from, Tabitha?" Grace said gently. She suspected the truth but was seeking confirmation.

Tabitha closed her eyes and counted her breathes, in and out, in and out. She did this for about a minute before she spoke again.
"When Abby was real..."
"Oi, I am real."
She started again. "When Abby was...here. I always knew, even if she wasn't ..."
"Don't tell her that! That's ours, Tabby. Our secret."

"She is real isn't she," said Grace who didn't miss the slip, "and she just corrected you. Can you say hello to her from me?"

"She can hear you. She's dead, not deaf."

That was discourteous. Grace showed no reaction but imagined how the girl's screams would sound.
"I can't hear her replies. Will you tell me what she says? Hello Abby. My name is Grace. What do you want most?"

"Are you going to tell her the truth?"
"Should I?"
"you told dad."
"Yeah." Tabitha was quiet then. She'd ended up here. "Abby wants to come back. But she can't. Never again."

That was interesting. However...
"I didn't only ask what she wanted, Tabitha, I asked you to tell me what she said. What did she say, please?"

Tabitha sighed. "she said, "I want to come home. The real way."" She didn't include the second part of what Abby had said.

"What is the alternative to the real way?" Grace asked curiously.

"If I'm home she's home. But it's still just me that can see her."

"She's never far away. That must be a comfort to you," said Grace. "Do you blame yourself for her death?"

Tabitha hunched her shoulders and drew her knees up.
"Ooh. I like her, Tabby." Abby ceased making faces.
Tabitha bit her lip.
"If you don't, you should. You left me, remember?" Abby smiled her never-more smile. It had begun to twist.
"That's not a comfort."
"Don't you want to stay with me?" Abby whined.
