It was easy to talk about school, and numbers. There was safety in numbers.
"Professor Esquire said it would get harder in the second semester. I thought he was only trying to scare us ... I admit I was wrong. Why did you choose Arithmancy?" It seemed like a very Ravenclaw thing to take.

"Well, the season's almost over, so you'll have more time soon. That's good. Or well, perhaps not, sinces, you know, the season will be over."

"This will sound very odd," said Mary, "But I never really liked Arithmancy. I was planning to take Care of Magical Creatures, but..." It was something that had bothered her for a while. "But something told me I should take Arithmancy. I don't know why. I just had a feeling that it was going to be important one day." She went quiet and mumbled the word 'destiny' It was embarrassing talking so vaguely about magic to someone who had been brought up with it. Even four years in, Mary did not have all the fluency in the terms that she should have. Her magic had always been instinctive and intuitive. If she'd been raised with Wizarding tutors from childhood she thought she'd no doubt be able to explain what she meant without sounding quite so woolly. She'd say something like 'Oh there was a causal nexus indicating a positive trend toward holistic actualisation attached to the choice of Arithmancy' and she'd have sounded Ravenclaw-Clever. But she wasn't. She was a "By the seat of her (pants)" Hufflepuff Witch and she'd just have to mumble through.

Scarlet smiled, "Thanks, Walter." She appreciated the support. "I'm sure it'll sort itself out. These things always seem to."
There was a brief pause. "How's things with you then?" She was cautious, she knew he'd been friends with Hayley, but she wasn't really sure how far he'd been affected by the events of Christmas.

"Well enough. I'm looking forward to watching the tournament next week." He shifted her books a little. "Plus, I'm using the break to work out a potion of my own invetion. I want to improve on one that I came across." His face lit up.
"I was also planning on getting in some reading. My life's not all about potions." He added.

"Heh." He didn't immediately have a response to that. "You may like to talk to my friend Elavial. She is a proper seer, or near enough to it. She's ..." He stopped short of talking about her predictions. A pained expression crossed his face. He took a deep breath and forced it away with visible effort. "She knows some things about destiny."

He stopped short of talking about her predictions. A pained expression crossed his face. He took a deep breath and forced it away with visible effort. "She knows some things about destiny." A proper seer... Not like Mary then, someone who just dabbled on the edges of magic's pool. "I'd like that," she said brightly, "It would be good to get some clarity. Has she been able to help you at all? You know, with whatever... is bothering you." She hoped she wasn't treading on anything too painful but she felt called to help where she could. "I am sorry to pry, but I really don't like seeing someone suffering like you are. I'm sorry Robert and you can tell me to shut up or go away or whatever you want, but I think you're really hurting and I hate that. Please, if you can think of anything at all I can do to help, I'd really like to."

"Why'd you chose not to enter?" She chuckled, "You could use your potions expertise in the arena, I'm sure it would come in handy."

"I'm not a great duelist, I don't think." He shrugged. "I was going to at first, but then," Walter paused, "it just didn't sound like it was for me. I'd much rather watch my friends be impressive."

(OOC: I don't think anyone but Walter and Mary has actually expressed that they want to help Robert. I now have an image in my head of the Hufflepuff common room being kind of like the kids playscape in the IKEA. Just drop Robert in there and he'll be fixed in no time. Thought I'd share that, now back to fiction-reality)
"Ela?" He considered it, and realised that ... "Yes, she has actually. Not by being a seer so much, but just ... by just being a friend. And it's okay, you can ask. It's ... It's fine."

Impressive? "Well that's debatable." She said with a chuckle, "We'll have to see what happens."

Elavial sat at the Ravenclaw table waiting for dinner. She seems apathetic but healthy, despite hair disheveled in a ponytail. She had made it a habit of avoiding mirrors for the last few months, but managed all the same. She was peering over a transfiguration book, about animagi, not for the class, but it was one of the last books found up in Otto's tower. At this point, she had decided a long time ago that Otto was probably never there at all. There was nothing she could find that could lead to finding him. She gave up the search a long time ago, but kept reading the books nonetheless. Something to occupy her mind.

"Okay." He turned, removing his arm from her shoulders as he did so, and putting his hands in his pockets. He fiddled with the change in his pocket absent-mindedly. "You know that Serenity and I were just joking." It was a statement, not a question. She frowned when he took his arm away, but didn't comment on that in particular as they walked towards the Great Hall. "It's hard to tell sometimes." She pursed her lips. "I can't always tell if that's just how you talk to girls, and it doesn't mean anything, or if it does mean something. I mean...you flirt a lot."

He laughed. "Half my friends seem to be Eagles. You bet I'm expecting the best."

"That's a lot of pressure." She sighed dramatically, "I'm sure we will do our best to live up to your expectations." Her shoulders relaxed and she laughed, managing to leave behind the stress of her meeting with Esquire.
