She squeezed his shoulder and held it firmly, steadying him physically and she hoped also mentally.

"Can you tell us where it is? The place with the wardrobe?" She glanced at Marie. It was important he stayed calm. It would be...unfortunate if the nuns came to see what was the matter.

"The house.. yes, I can tell you. It was my house once. I owned it. But not anymore. And the wardrobe was not there when I came back from... from Austria. All the furniture had gone. Puls. Puls took it."
Hs grimaced.
"Nothing left."

Marisa pursed her lips. She knew what losing a home was like. "We'd really appreciate it if we could go there."

"Aww hell." Yeah she knew them. "Do you remember an address?"
She hoped they didn't have to go digging through Puls records after this wardrobe. That might take a while.

Allbrass was glad the women had handled the interview. His own direct approach would probably have scared Marten into silence. He'd been impressed with Marisa's subtle spell work though - they'd got a lot more from the gaunt survivor than they otherwise would have done.
He made a note of the address Marten gave for his former home, but the man had no idea where Puls had taken his furniture. The address would have to do for a start.
"You've been very kind, sir," said Allbrass. "Ladies, we should leave him to his work"

"Thank you for your help." She gave him one last pat and stepped back. "Good luck with that."

Marisa flicked her wand to the side one last time, adding in a small memory charm before removing her calming influence. If it took, he'd only remember that they'd asked him some meaningless questions about the area and then went on their way. Nothing to be worried about.
She waved and followed the other two out.

Allbrass led the way to the address that Marten had given them, a single house in a street of tall houses in the north of the city. It looked utterly unremarkable and he paused and stood by a tree on the far side of the street, lighting a cigarette after offering them round.
"Under new ownership," he said, "and all the furniture removed by those vultures." Abraham Puls and company were scum who had profited by looting the properties of those removed by the Nazis and selling on the furniture. "I suspect it's the wardrobe that carries the mystery not the room, mm? But we can always find a way in and check. What do you think?"

"It may have left traces. Could give us a better idea of what we're dealing with." She took the cigarette, staring up at the window thoughtfully. "Though it'd have to be pretty strong magic to have left a sign after 3 years. Still...." If it was strong enough to make 13 people disappear, and at least one of them end up on the other side of the channel, well, that was something.
"Want me to look for a way in?"

She took a cigarette too but kept it unlit. The activity helped her focus.
"Marissa is right. Magic leaves traces, even after three years. You just need the right tool to detect it."
She took an object the size and shape of a ballpoint pen from her coat. It had coloured grooves along the side, making loops around surface. "All I have is this." She popped off the lid. Instead of where you'd expect the ballpoint to be, there was a little brush made of feathers.
"Any trace we pick up is worthwhile, right? I'll have to get into that room where the wardrobe was."
She left Hugo to decide how they'd get in.

Hugo Allbrass looked up at the building and then closer at the doorway.
"For once, a lucky break," he said and tapped at a card pinned there. "Apartment for rent. Shall we enquire?"

Allbrass spoke to the current home-owner, a gnarled old man in a threadbare grey waistcoat. Yes, the room upstairs was for rent, he had no luck with his tenants. He showed them the way and the rooms up there were cold and dismal. The furniture was all cheap and second hand.
"Can we have a few moments to look around?" Allbrass asked, and the man left them to it.
